Forecasts from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had predicted that China's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions would rise by about 2.5 to 5 percent each year between 2004 and 2010. But the estimates are two to four times too low, according to new research led by Maximilian Auffhammer of the University of California, Berkeley. The study calculated that for the period from 2004 to 2010, China's CO2 emissions will have grown by at least 11 percent a year. Read the All Article HERE

Bacteria often get bad press, with those found in water often linked to illness and disease. But researchers at The University of Nottingham are using these tiny organisms alongside the very latest membrane filtration techniques to improve and refine water cleaning technology. These one-celled organisms eat the contaminants present in water - whether it is being treated prior to industrial use or even for drinking - in a process called bioremediation. A newly defined biochemical pathway in plants may provide the scientific tools to design plants that will yield larger quantities of alternative transportation fuels than currently can be produced, according to Purdue University researchers. The pathway moves materials that determine cell shape and size through a system of signaling proteins, said Dan Szymanski, a plant geneticist and cellular biologist. By learning more about the growth and development process, it may be possible to engineer plants with improved properties such as cell walls that are more massive or are more easily fermented in the biofuel process. People want to do the right thing and recycle their plastics - especially if it's easy. At the homes of environmentally conscious people across southern New Jersey, nearly every piece of polymer winds up at curb's edge awaiting the recycling truck. Plastic caps are often screwed onto empty soda bottles: Hard-plastic cat litter containers are filled with other plastics and left at the curb; huge plastic toys that have outlasted youthful exuberance find their way to the familiar blue barrel...
