The new system, developed by National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo., and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C., will be implemented at the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Of every 100 hectares of forest lost worldwide between the years 2000 and 2005, nearly 65 hectares were in Latin America and the Caribbean. In that period, the average annual rate was 4.7 million hectares lost -- 249,000 hectares more than the entire decade of the 1990s. To combat deforestation, in recent years most governments have designed new monitoring and control mechanisms, with some even using the army to go after illegal loggers. A team from Newcastle University aims to design soils that can remove carbon from the atmosphere, permanently and cost-effectively. This has never previously been attempted anywhere in the world. The concept underlying the initiative exploits the fact that plants, crops and trees naturally absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) during photosynthesis and then pump surplus carbon through their roots into the earth around them. Colombia and Costa Rica are among the top ten nations in a ranking of excellence in environmental performance. The 2008 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), conducted by US universities Yale and Columbia, was announced last week (23 January) at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Costa Rica was ranked fifth and Colombia ninth, behind the top ranking nations Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The first phase of an experimental project for recycling nuclear fuel has been a "spectacular success," according to a top official at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dana Christensen, ORNL's associate lab director for energy and engineering sciences, said the lab was able to quickly assemble the expertise and resources for the work last year and make significant accomplishments within a matter of months. The Oak Ridge laboratory is processing small quantities of spent reactor fuel. Workers use remotely operated manipulators at shielded "hot cells" to chop up highly radioactive materials and evaluate the fuel composition and off-gases. Read the All Article HERE

The Irish waste sector has warned that a call from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for “urgent action” for Ireland to meet its EU 2010 landfill targets could be too late. A discussion paper published at the beginning of this month entitled Hitting the targets for biodegradable municipal waste: Ten targets for change said that the outcomes currently being achieved with biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) are “less than satisfactory”. India to produce the world's first commercial vehicle powered by compressed air. The world's first commercial vehicle powered soley by compressed air is being developed by MDI and manufactured by India's largest automaker Tata Motors. Developed by Guy Negre (pictured to your left), an ex-Formula One engineer, the first commercial Air Car will be capable of hitting 68 mph and will have a range of 125 miles.
